It is very important to eat healthy regardless of age or location. It is also difficult for most individuals for several reasons. College campuses generally do not make the task any easier. There are several tips to keep in mind and effective steps take which are relatively simple. Many of these can also save money.

Healthy Campus Eating

Eat a wide variety of foods because it is best for the body as well as the mind. Variety actual increases healthy appetites. Try to consume at least a couple of servings each of fruits and veggies, especially fresh and raw every day.

Everyone has heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This is absolutely true and not some old wives tale. Eating something before class each morning can actually fuel the brain and promote brain activity.

Watch out for liquid calories and limit soda intake. Many college students thrive on soda pop and energy drinks. Both of these are high in calories, sugars, and low on nutrition. Do not forget that coffees, especially specialty coffees, and alcoholic beverages fit into this category as well. All of these quickly drain bank accounts too.

Keep healthy snacks in the trusty old knapsack. This includes fruit juice, pieces of fresh fruit, cereal or nutrition bars, and health crackers. Dried fruits and nuts are excellent snacks. These types of snacks fuel the body and the brain throughout the day. They can also curb those fast food attacks when hunger strikes.

Shop for food on a weekly basis at a local grocery store and never on campus. Stock the pantry as well as the back pack with healthy food items instead of processed junk. For those who must have home sort of sweet snack through the day, buy muffin mixes and prepare them at home to take along.

Eat reasonable and health portions. Be sure to eat healthy snacks throughout the day to curb hunger. This way there is no need to pig out and over indulge when the chance to sit down to dinner arises. When dinner arrives eat normal serving size portions.

Never wait until that full feeling hits. Individuals who eat fast generally end up being miserable after eating. This is because it takes nearly 30 minutes for that full feeling to register. People who eat in 10 minutes do not feel full until it is too late and they are over stuffed. This is never healthy for the body. It is much healthier and enjoyable to take the time to chew food thoroughly and actually taste it.

Drink plenty of healthy fluids including water. Staying hydrated is extremely important to all bodily functions and systems including metabolism which is responsible for burning calories. Keep bottled water and juices on hand. A less expensive way to go is purchase gallons of water and juice as well as a reusable to go drink container.

Last, but certainly not least, never be too rigid about food. Eating healthy is a way of life and individuals have to stay vigilant; however, it is good for the body, mind, and soul to be rewarded from time to time. Work a once a week fast food or decadent dessert into the budget and diet. Students work hard studying, learning, and staying on course. They deserve to indulge every now and then.
